EM – 6.4 magnitude earthquake shakes southwest Japan


TOKYO, Jan. 22 (Jiji Press) — An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.4 struck at around 1:08 a.m. Saturday (4:08 p.m. Friday) at a depth of about 40 kilometers off the Pacific coast the Kyushu region of southwestern Japan GMT), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The quake peaked at the top 5, the fourth-highest level on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, in the cities of Oita, Saiki, and Taketa in Oita Prefecture, as well as in the cities of Nobeoka and Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture.

Minutes after the quake, the Japanese government set up a quake liaison office under the Risk Management Center of the Prime Minister’s Office.
