YAOUNDE: Hosts Cameroon overcame another hesitant start to beat Ethiopia 4-1 on Thursday and advance to the next stage of the Africa Cup with their second win in a row in Group A.
Captain Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi both scored two goals when Cameroon showed a strong performance in the second half and advanced to six points after beating Burkina Faso in their opening game.
But the triumph over Ethiopia at the Olembe Stadium was much more convincing and will boost morale as they have a heavy burden of expectation.
Ethiopia got off to a shock start when they caught the Cameroon defense napping. Amanuel Aregawi delivered a square ball into the box and Dawa Dukele stepped in front of his marker to bring the pass home.
It was the second time Cameroon were behind in the tournament but it only took them four minutes to level .
Collins Fai, who had proven negligent in defense when Ethiopia shot, made amends with a good cross, and Toko Ekambi used a weak marker to head the ball in the eighth minute.
The French-born Striker rattled a header at the woodwork, but Ethiopia was also dangerous on the counterattack and kept catching up with Cameroon at its own pace, even if it didn’t have much possession.
But shortly after the start of the second half they collapsed Aboubakar scored two goals in so many minutes.
He headed a Collins cross home in the 53rd minute and pushed a similar square ball home from Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu.
“We were menta l ready for this game. This is a big boost for the tournament and we hope we have more spectators for our next game, “he said at a press conference.
COVID restrictions meant that the newly built Olembe Stadium was closed for the game was about 20 percent full.
