Sargeant receives the place in the Driver Academy after finishing third in the 2020 Formula 3 drivers ‘championship and seventh in 2021.

Sargeant finished third in the 2020 Formula 3 drivers’ championship and in 2021 Seventh, despite running for a medium-sized Charouz team that finished fifth in the F3 team standings. On Friday, ahead of the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, Williams announced the recruitment of Florida-born Sargeant, 20, to a long-term agreement.

Sargeant, who has yet to announce his 2022 timetables has hopes to get into the F1 grid one day. The last American to compete in Formula 1 in 2015 was Alexander Rossi.

Williams was taken over by the New York investment firm Dorilton Capital in August 2020 and was eighth in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship until 2021. The team has already confirmed a racing driver line-up for 2022 from incumbent Nicholas Latifi and ex-Red Bull racing driver Alexander Albon, who will take the place of Mercedes-linked George Russell.

As part of the deal, Sargeant will do the simulator work and help develop Williams by being part of the team both on the track and at its Grove, UK plant.

The deal may pave the way for Sargeant to get behind the wheel of Formula 1 as early as 2022 Machines would qualify to climb.

Sargeant is the third American currently associated with a Formula 1 team; Jak Crawford is part of Red Bull’s youth program, while Juan Manuel Correa is linked to Alfa Romeo through the Sauber Motorsport program.

Williams also has a number of young people under his wing, including one-off racing starter Jack Aitken, the Formula 2 driver Roy Nissany and W Series leader Jamie Chadwick.
