EM – Football: Chelsea get past Villa on penalties, Man United from the League Cup

LONDON: Timo Werner scored his first goal of the season when a vastly changed Chelsea team crept into the fourth round of the League Cup, beating Aston Villa 4-3 on penalties after Wednesday’s game against Stamford Bridge (1).

However, Manchester United failed when West Ham United were able to avenge their defeat in the Premier League at the weekend with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford, which was sealed by Manuel Lanzini’s early attempt.

West Ham held their first win at Old Trafford since 2007 and will face defending champions Manchester City next.

Harry Kane was on target for Tottenham Hotspur but they gave Wolverhampton an early 2-0 lead Wanderers before they won 3-2 on penalties when coach Nuno Espirito Santo celebrated his second win of the season against his former club.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel made 10 changes in his starting XI and the German goal mer Werner took the opportunity to put his team in the lead in the 54th minute when he headed a cross from Reece James past Villa keeper Jed Steer.

It was a frustrating night for United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who found another path to cutlery blocked as he chased his first trophy at the Old Trafford Hotseat. </ "They want to go through, but it's been a long season, we've tried well. They scored a goal and after that we played well for a long time, tried and statistics mean nothing. When you have 27 "shots the boys tried."

Goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Kane put Spurs in front, but the Wolves hit back through Leander Dendoncker and Daniel Podence.

Ruben Neves would have been late Wolves almost won with a deflected attempt against the crossbar and then missed his penalty when Tottenham squeezed through.

Arsenal moved into the fourth round with a 3-0 home win over third division AFC Wimbledon, with Alexandre Lacazette met on its first start since April. Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah struck late.
