EM – Greens welcome the path to establishing the truth and to the contract report

Cassy O’Connor MP | Green Party Leader The generation pain, deep wounds and ongoing dispossession of the Tasmanian Aborigines were recognized today by the Tasmanian Parliament with the publication of the “Path to Truth and Treaty” report. Members of the Aboriginal community, along with Professor Kate Warner and Professor Tim McCormack, came to the chamber to see the report presented. The report is a guide to the truth-clarification, the treaty and real reconciliation. It can help heal the deepest of wounds. Lutruwita / Tasmania is stolen land. It was tended by its residents for 50,000 years or more and then taken away with a weapon from the Aborigines shortly after the arrival of the English in 1803. There can be no more broken promises and false hopes. We thank everyone who had the confidence and the time to contribute to this report, and Professors Kate Warner and Tim McCormack for their careful consideration. We also commend the Prime Minister for his courage in taking these early steps. The Greens welcome the government’s commitment to a truth clarification commission and reaffirm our longstanding support for the treaty, land restitution and the change in the date of Australia Day. We are determined to work cooperatively with Aboriginal people across Parliament and the community to deliver on the promises made in this report.

The Tasmanian Greens support changing the date of Australia Day, working towards the treaty , the day of reconciliation and other land restitutions.
