EM – Haller in doubles as Ajax hold 100% record

ISTANBUL: Sebastien Haller continued his Champions League scorer with two goals in the second half when Ajax Amsterdam beat Besiktas 2-1 on Wednesday and secured the top spot in Group C.

Haller came off the bench at the beginning of the second half and scored in the 54th.

The 27-year-old Haller scored nine goals in five games in the group stage, tied with Robert Lewandowski from FC Bayern Munich in this year’s Champions League Goalscorer list.

Besiktas, who lost all five of his group games, took the lead after Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui hit the ball and Rachid Ghezzal pocketed a penalty in the 22nd minute.

But Ajax didn’t last long waiting and equalized after a long pass from Lisandro Martinez’s defense, who put Nicolas Tagliafico down on the left wing and gave Haller a slight transformation with his angular ball.

The Ajax winner came from the free kick ß by Dusan Tadic, who initially fell on Martinez, who missed his shot, but Haller stuck out a lanky leg to steer the ball home.

Haller had the ball in the net in stoppage time, but his teammate David Neres was sidelined to prevent him from doing a hat trick.

Ajax, who sidelined several regular players on Wednesday, can end the group stage at home against Portuguese club Sporting on December 7th.
