After an opening 4-under-68, Bryson DeChambeau was part of a group of players who finished 19th and chased a trio of leaders in the BMW Championship.

DeChambeau started his round birdie birdie -Par eagle birdie to get everyone’s attention. This birdie on the seventh par-4 brought him down to 6 that day and a share of the tournament leadership with 10.

Another birdie on the eighth par-4, this one from a height of 9 meters, helped him score 7 – to reach below 29 – a career dip for him on the tour.

DeChambeau added three more birdies to his card on the second nine but missed a 15-foot for birdie on the 15th par-4. He had to play his last three holes in 3 under to shoot 59.

An eagle at par-5 16th helped a lot. And not just an eagle, but an eagle set up by an iron from 252 yards in the rough to within 3 feet within 3 feet.

DeChambeau, now 12 below in the round, stood on the 186 yard, Par-3 17. DeChambeau was not deterred. He aimed dead and threw it to 17 feet.

However, he missed the birdie performance and his shot on 59 went to 474 yards, par-4 18. A perfect 333 yard drive left him 143 yards to the hole back.

The approach was perfect and he turned a wedge within 6 feet of the hole.

DeChambeau hadn’t missed a putt within 12 feet all day – this one officially 6 feet, 3 inches – but missed on the high side to shoot 60.

DeChambeau said after his round that he misinterpreted the putt for 59. But his 60 brought him to 16 under par and one stroke ahead of Patrick Cantlay, who shot 63 on Friday.
