Jan. 18 (UPI) – Indonesian lawmakers passed legislation on Tuesday to officially move the country’s capital from Jakarta to a location in the state of Kalimantan — and name the new center of government Nusantara.

Tuesday’s move follows a promise by President Joko Widodo three years ago to relocate the capital due to a number of factors in Jakarta, including a crowded population and declining altitude.

The relocation of the capital is intended to relieve the ten million city of Jakarta and the island of Java. The new capital is located in a forested part east of the island of Borneo.

“Moving the capital to Kalimantan is based on several considerations, regional advantages and prosperity,” Development Minister Suharso Monoarfa said, according to CNN.

“With the vision the birth of a new economic hub in the heart of the archipelago.”

A new legal framework passed by lawmakers supports Widodo’s ambitious $32 billion mega-project and sets out how the capital’s development will be funded and managed.

The project envisions a low-carbon ‘supercentre’ that will support sustainable growth in the pharmaceutical, healthcare and technology sectors.

Although construction will begin this year, it will likely be decades before Widodo surpasses his final five-year term.
