Rassie van der Dussen (129*) and Temba Bavuma (110) were the bright spots with the racquet as South Africa beat India 296/4 in the first ODI of the three-game series here at Boland Park, Paarl on Wednesday scored.
Bavuma and van der Dussen put up 204 runs for the fourth wicket and this is the second-highest of any South African pair in ODIs against India.
South Africa opted to bat first, and got off to a bad start as the hosts lost opener Janneman Malan (6) in the fifth over of the inning. The batter was sent back into the pavilion by Pacer Jasprit Bumrah and this put skipper Temba Bavuma in the middle. After the first ten overs, the Proteas’ score was 39/1.
Indian bowlers were able to strangle the Proteas’ batters and Bavuma and de Kock found it difficult in the middle. The 39-run stand for the second wicket ended over in the 16th when Ravichandran bowled Ashwin De Kock (27). Shortly thereafter, Venkatesh Iyer’s direct hit against Aiden Markram (4) prevailed and Proteas was reduced to 68/3 in the 18th over.
Rassie van der Dussen then joined Bavuma in the middle and the duo livened up the innings of Proteas by mixing caution with aggression. The partnership saw both batters surpass their respective fifty run marks. Bavuma brought his ton in the 45th over while van der Dussen hit the milestone in the 48th over of the inning. In the last five overs, the Proteas added 51 runs to the total and took the score past the 295-run mark.
Dhawan and Kohli push Indian Total past the 100 mark. The hunt is looking good so far. The target is under 200. There is still a lot to beat.
