LONDON: Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo stormed to victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday, took his fifth win of the season and extended his lead at the top of the MotoGP World Championship.
The Frenchman, who started from third on the grid started out, took the lead on lap five, opening a gap of three seconds on the pursuers before heading home in style to cement the championship this season.
The win built Quartararo’s lead over Suzuki’s reigning world champion Joan Mir, who finished in ninth place, was aiming for 65 points at the top of the table.
Quartararo dedicated his victory to the supporters who had come in large numbers to watch the race.
“It’s great, to see the fans and share the win with them, “he said. “I can take more risks now, I want to fight for victories. With a 65-point lead I don’t have to think about the championship.”
Mir’s Suzuki team-mate Alex Rins finished second for his first podium of the season, while Aleix Espargaro left Aprilia Racing Team Gresini left Jack Miller behind on the final lap to finish third and take his team’s first MotoGP podium.
“It’s like a dream. I’m super happy,” said Espargaro. “I always believed in the project. I want to enjoy the moment, but believe me, I always want more. Now that we’re in a good moment, we have to keep working hard.
Pole sitter Pol Espargaro took the lead at the start of the race, closely followed by his brother Aleix in second place, before Quartararo made his move and began to be clear. Pol finished fifth.
Honda’s six-time premier class winner Marc Marquez crashed on the first lap along with Pramac Ducati’s rookie rider Jorge Martin after a collision between the two.
“I want to apologize to Martin for it was completely my fault, “said Marquez. “It was the first lap and I was too optimistic. I apologize to Martin and the Pramac team, but races are sometimes like that and today it was my mistake.”
