NEW YORK – Kyrie Irving could be just the jolt the Brooklyn Nets need to escape a mid-season slump.

After keeping Irving out of the team’s first 35 games for refusing to get the coronavirus vaccine, Irving made his much-anticipated debut of the season.

Coach Steve Nash said it was clear that Irving, who shot and missed the game’s first shot by the nets, was excited to be back.

“So you can see the smile on his face and the energy and what it means for him to be back, and it’s exciting for all of us to have him back in the herd “said Nash.

Irving is unable to play at home because of New York City’s vaccination requirements and was undesirable on the road. The Nets didn’t want a part-time player and sent him away during the preseason.

Things have changed. Nash said with the recent COVID-19 outbreak that severely understaffed the Nets, having the superstar part-time was a better option than signing more players on 10-day hardship contracts.

Kevin Durant scored 39 points to the Nets, who have lost three straight times, all at home, and Irving can’t stop the Nets fighting in Brooklyn if he stays unvaccinated. The vaccine is required for New York athletes who play in public places. He said it was best for him to refuse and he was aware that there would be ramifications.

But he can play in street games in the cities where there is no mandate, including any upcoming games during a stretch where the Nets are away for seven of the next 11 games.

The Timberwolves were hit hard by COVID-19 and had their preferred starting line-up for the first time in 10 games.
