EM – NYC requires vaccinations for indoor restaurants, gyms, and other venues

New York City requires proof of vaccination for certain indoor activities, including restaurants, gyms, and venues. It is another strategy to incentivize vaccinations as the delta variant is driving coronavirus cases to dangerously high levels.

The mandate, which comes into effect from next month, applies to both workers and employees Customers.

Mayor Bill de Blasio will announce the plan on Tuesday morning at his daily press conference. Individuals can verify their vaccination using the city’s COVID Safe app, the state’s Excelsior app, or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paper card issued at vaccination sites.

The Mayor is expected to attend during his press conference provides more details, but the proposal is similar to one in Europe where people have to present a “green pass” – a vaccination certificate or a negative Covid test – to visit bars, restaurants, museums, indoor sports venues and other cultural or cultural events Entertainment venues.

But the city’s plan, dubbed the “Key to NYC Pass”, only calls for vaccinations. Evidence of a negative virus test will not be accepted.

Critics are likely to voice both civil liberty and privacy concerns. Albert Fox Cahn of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project recently told WNYC that the app is not checking the uploaded documents.

“I uploaded a photo of Mickey Mouse when I signed up for it and then I received a popup Window appeared saying that you are confirming this is correct, “he said. “You click yes. And then you’re done.”

As I told @WNYC today, New York City’s new #NYCCovidSafe app isn’t exactly cutting edge. It accepted this portrait of Mickey as proof of vaccination. We need to get the New Yorkers vaccinated, not another City Hall PR gag. Listen here: https://t.co/GRGIWtuK2j pic.twitter.com/O1wS73FbGV
