Tensions between Serbia and Australia have escalated after the Balkan country pulled the plug on Rio Tinto’s plans for a giant lithium mine.

The Anglo-Australian miner is said to have been released from the decision, which came less than a week after being deported by Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic on the eve of the Australian Open.

It follows weeks of environmental protests in Belgrade and elsewhere in Serbia that have clogged key roads and bridges.
