November 24 (UPI) – Sweden’s first female prime minister resigned within hours of being appointed leader of the Scandinavian country after receiving a budget defeat in parliament that led the Greens to leave the minority coalition government.

Magdalena Andersson, 54, was named Sweden’s first female prime minister on Wednesday, following Stefan Lofven as both the country’s leader and the leader of the Social Democrats, Sweden’s official Twitter account said.

However, Andersson resigned within hours after Parliament voted for the opposition’s budget proposal, which resulted in the Greens withdrawing from the minority coalition government they had with Andersson’s Social Democrats.

“There is one Constitutional practice that a coalition government should step down if a party leaves, “she told reporters during a press conference, The Local told. “I don’t want to lead a government whose legitimacy is being questioned.”

Andersson was elected Prime Minister by Parliament early this morning and was due to take office on Friday after a meeting with King Carl XVI. Gustaf officially take over.

A little later, however, the parliament voted 154-143 for the budget proposal of the opposition, reported EuroNews.

The spokeswoman for the Green Party Marta Stenevi then announced her resignation from the government and said: “We cannot sit in a government that implements a negotiated policy [of the Sweden Democrats]”.

The country’s Twitter account said the current government will remain in power until a new government is in office.

Andersson, who has been Treasury Secretary since 2014, added that she hopes to be re-elected prime minister as the leader of the only social democratic minority government.

Although the Greens have withdrawn their support for the coalition government, they said they will support Andersson in the upcoming Prime Minister election.
