EM – The KTM 1290 Super Duke GT returns … to Europe – Adventure Rider

KTM updated the worst sports naked motorcycle on the market (also possibly the only sports naked motorcycle on the market?). The Super Duke GT returns for 2022 with several updates, but for now we’ve only seen it confirmed for Euro customers.

The announcement comes in the middle of the EICMA show, but KTM wasn’t actually on the show and made up their mind instead, for announcing the motorcycle outside the (expensive) boundaries of the event. Whether you think that’s cheeky or frugal is up to you, but we can say the resulting machine looks like a lot of fun.

The Super Duke GT has always been a bit of an eccentric that Super’s hypernaked platform has always been a bit of an eccentric Duke took and modified them slightly for long-haul comfort and convenience. That’s the theme again for 2022; KTM’s updated GT has a 6 gallon fuel tank to cover the miles, and it comes with a set of easily removable hard bags, and heated grips should be standard too (they were standard on previous models). The windshield offers minimal protection from the elements, as does the bulbous gas tank.

These are all pretty familiar things. For 2022, the GT will get a larger 7-inch TFT screen, which should make navigation even easier. Speaking of which, KTM says this will be their first motorcycle with a new turn-by-turn plus navigation system. According to the press release:

Turn-by-Turn PLUS, which further improves the tour experience. TBT will be available via KTM Connect. This allows navigation instructions to be projected directly onto the new 7-inch TFT display, which helps the driver to navigate more effectively. Turn-by-Turn PLUS will be launched on the 2022 KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT, with rollouts to other models in the near future.

Powered by SYGIC®, TBT can also be operated offline so that drivers can plan their trip and adventure from remote locations. There is also an advanced search function and a wide variety of POIs, including gas stations, restaurants and rest stops, while the system allows you to select one of your pre-saved destinations directly from the TFT dash. All of the above functions can be accessed directly from the new 7-inch TFT dash, while the driver no longer has to take his phone out of his jacket pocket, which makes the quick and quick changes more convenient and efficient.

Indeed, it seems Sygic (for a long time very popular as a smartphone-based navigation system for cars) to penetrate the world of motorcycles and also to be integrated into the machines of other OEMs. Stay tuned – hopefully it’s an improvement over the existing technology.

The wheels on the new bike are lighter – they are the same units that KTM installed on the Super Duke R, which means less unsprung masses and probably faster steering.

For 2022 the GT still has the semi-active KTM WP Apex Pro chassis with settings for Rider, Rider & pillion, Rider & Luggage or Rider, pillion & Luggage. There is a new anti-dive setting for 2022, as can be found on other high-end KTMs this year.

The engine itself has been updated to the Euro5 emissions standard; it’s still the LC8 V-Twin with a displacement of 1,301 cc. It should generate around 175 hp, which is certainly enough to get you, your pillion passenger and your luggage across the country with minimal problems in order to master the steeper inclines against the headwind …

KTM has announced this bike for Europe, but nothing has been promised to American and Canadian riders. The GT model is a ridiculously fun motorcycle for weekend touring indeed, but it’s never been a top seller in North America. Don’t be shocked if it comes too late or doesn’t show up at all.
