Georgetown (Guyana): Australia and Sri Lanka clinched their first points at the U-19 World Cup after registering comfortable victories over the West Indies and Scotland respectively on the opening day.

While Australia recorded a six-wicket clinching victory against the West Indies, Sri Lanka defeated Scotland in two Group D games by 40 runs on Friday.

A disciplined Australian bowling unit first bundled hosts West Indies to a paltry 169 and then returned to overtake the target, and scored 170 for four in 44.5 overs, with Teague Wyllie hitting a 129-ball 86 peppered with eight shots on the fence.

In the other game, Sri Lanka, who opted to bat, was with 218 in 45.2 overs on the rise but their bowling unit led by Dunith Wellalage (5/27) was up to the opportunity to overtake Scotland for 178 with 8 balls.

The West Indies, who after winning the toss decided to batting, got off to a disastrous start when they stumbled 12-3 in the sixth over at Providence Stadium, with pacer Tom Whitney and leg spinner William Salzmann doing the damage.

Auguste joined wicketkeeper Rivaldo Clarke (37 of 42 balls) down the middle and the two sewed together a 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket, stabilizing the innings in the process.

However, the home team suffered another meltdown following the dismissal of Clarke by Indian-born spinner Nivethan Radhakrishnan (3rd /48) in the 22nd over.

Radhakrishnan hit two more punches, sending back Anderson Mahase and Johann Layne in quick succession to leave the West Indies with 131 for eight in just the 32nd over.

Cooper Connolly, who leads Australia in the age group tournament, also conceded three wickets, including Auguste’s significant one, leaving the hosts struggling to e rebound.

McKenny Clarke, who batted in ninth place, hit 29 of 35 balls, using three sixes and two fours to lengthen the innings and add some valuable runs to the West Indies’ total.

In response, Australia lost Corey Miller for nothing, but opening partner Wyllie anchored the chase with a responsible unbeaten fifty.

Wyllie forged a 53-run partnership with skipper Cooper Connolly (23) after Isaac Higgins (9) in the 8th over was also sent back.

After Connolly was cleaned up by Onaje Amory in the 18th over, Wyllie added another 75 runs with Nivethan Radhakrishnan (31) to keep Australia on the hunt.

Matthew Nandu got rid of Radhakrishnan in the 39th round but by then it was too late as Wyllie, accompanied by Campbell, defeated Kellaway (10) home.

In the other game of the day at Everest Cricket Club Ground in Georgetown Scotland nd Sri Lanka with 218 in 45.2 overs.

Sakuna Nidarshana Liyanage became the top scorer for Sri Lanka with a run-a-ball 84, while Chamindu Wickramasinghe (28) and Sadisha Rajapaksa (24) were in the starting XI, but couldn’t benefit from it.

For Scotland, Sean Fischer Keogh was the top bowler with numbers of 3/56, while Jack Jarvis and Oliver Davidson both had two wickets each.

In pursuit of the total, the Scottish batters started but failed to capitalize as Wellalage emerged as the boss wreck with his five-wicket haul.

Skipper Wellalage snapped five for 27 while Shevon Daniel (2/16) and Wanuja Sahan (1/33) and Matheesha Pathirana (1/28) were the other wicket takers.

Jack Jarvis kept Scotland on the hunt with his 61-ball 55 but they lacked partnerships.
