Victorian authorities are not ruling out a fifth lockdown, saying the way to avoid the harsh Covid-19 measure depends on two things.
A mother and two young children were subjected to a terrifying home invasion by a selfish criminal infected with Covid-19 during Victoria’s second lockdown.
Moses Laula was sentenced Friday in Victoria County Court to 26 months in a juvenile court for burglary, theft and theft of a motor vehicle.
The Doveton man was 18 when he broke into a house in Cranbourne North on August 6 last year, while Melbourne was shut down in phase four, banning residents from leaving the house for non-essential reasons – stealing was not one of them.
Laula should also have been in isolation because he was infected with the corona virus.
Him and another boy climbed a fence in the backyard around 10 a.m., each wearing a black hoodie and blue face mask.
The mother was inside with her two children, ages five and six, when she saw them and started banging on the windows in an attempt to scare them away, a police summary of agreed-upon facts says.
The gangsters smashed a window and broke in, demanding her phone and car keys and threatening her with a knife in front of her children.
« Give me your phone or I’ll stab your kid, » said the other criminal, who can’t be named because he was 17, as he pushed her.
She told them where her keys were and they stole her car, leaving her « visibly trembling, crying and extremely scared ».
Less than 45 minutes later, the stolen car was spotted by police on Princes Highway, speeding and dragging through traffic.
The other boy drove and crashed into an unmarked police car, damaging it beyond repair and giving one of the officers a concussion.
He drove on and Laula stayed in the car when his accomplice drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with two other cars before eventually colliding with two parked cars and they were arrested.
Laula was bitten in the arm by a police dog and the accomplice was given a taser when he tried to flee during the dramatic arrest.
Then Laula was discovered to be Covid positive while being near the family he robbed, police and hospital staff who treated him for the dog bite.
He was sentenced to two years and two months in custody by Judge Kevin Doyle.
