NEW DELHI: Gujarat’s six metropolitan polls – Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar – are being held for 575 seats.
According to the latest data, the BJP has won 15 seats in Bhavnagar, 24 in Rajkot and 45 in Vadodara. In Jamnagar, the BJP has won 32 seats, while the Congress has won five. Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is contesting for the first time, has hampered the Congress’s growth in Rajkot.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), an average of 46.08 votes were cast during the polls on Sunday morning from 7 am to 6 pm. The lowest voter turnout was 42.51 in Ahmedabad, 53.38 in Jamnagar, 50.72 in Rajkot, 49.46 in Bhavnagar, 47.84 in Vadodara and 47.14 per cent in Surat.
If BJP dominates the elections of local bodies, this time many senior and multi-time corporates have been denied tickets, which has led to resentment in the party. The Assembly elections next year will give an indication of voter sentiment.
