Gujarat Local Body Polls: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the petition against the counting of votes to be held on two separate days for local body elections in Gujarat. The Supreme Court has allowed the Gujarat State Election Commission to count the municipal corporation elections and municipal and district panchayat elections on different dates. Explain that the Gujarat Congress had filed a petition challenging the order of the Gujarat High Court. Earlier, the Gujarat High Court had rejected the petition against the counting of votes to be held on two separate days for local body elections in the state.
For your information, let us know that the counting of votes for the municipal elections has been announced by the State Election Commission on 23 February, while the counting of votes for the municipal and district panchayat elections has been announced on 2 March. On February 3, the Gujarat High Court had summoned the reply by issuing notice to the State Election Commission and the Government of Gujarat after hearing a petition challenging the Election Commission circular on the local body elections in the state. The Gujarat High Court had directed the State Election Commission and the state government to file an affidavit on the issue by February 6, the petition filed in the High Court argued that the votes of the municipal corporation and the panchayat should be counted simultaneously.
Actually, it was officially announced by the State Election Commission that the local body elections would be held in two phases. While votes will be counted on two different days. Voting of 6 municipal corporations, including Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, will be held on February 21 and the counting of votes for election results will be held on February 23. While the elections for the municipal, zilla panchayat and taluka panchayat will be held on February 28, the Election Commission’s decision to count the votes on March 2 was challenged in the Gujarat High Court.
