After several days of brainstorming, the way has now been cleared for Himanta Biswa Sarma to become the next Chief Minister of Assam. He has been elected its leader by the Assam BJP Legislature Party. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar gave this information. Earlier, outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal submitted his resignation to Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Sunday itself. Let me tell you that since the meeting in Delhi, there were speculations that the command of Assam can be handed over to Himanta Biswa Sarma, while Sonowal can be called back to Delhi.

Sarma was ahead in the race already
For the last six days in Assam, there was a lot of confusion in the BJP leadership about the new Chief Minister. To resolve this, the central leadership on Saturday summoned the outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the state Health Minister and strong contender for the post of Chief Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma, and discussed them extensively. This round of meetings lasted for about three hours at the residence of BJP President JP Nadda. Home Minister Amit Shah and party’s National Organization Minister BL Santosh were also present during this period. There are indications that the party does not want to give any indication that differences in the party or pressure on the central leadership will emerge.

Let me tell you that a week ago, BJP-led coalition won the state assembly elections with a clear majority. Out of 126 assembly seats in the state, BJP won 75 seats.
