In a petition filed in the Civil Court in Varanasi, the petitioner claimed that the site of the Gyanvapi Mosque belonged to Hindus. According to the petitioner, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb demolished a part of the 2000 year old Kashi Vishwanath temple in 1664 and built a Gyanvapi mosque on the site. There has been a self-contained Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva here since ancient times. This Jyotirlinga is known as Vishweshwar. The temple was built long before the Muslims invaded the land. It is said that this temple was built by King Vikramaditya 2050 years ago. Here is the temple of Lord Vishweshwara. The petition claims that part of the temple was demolished due to religious reasons when Muslim rulers were in power in the country.

The petition was opposed by the Gyanvapi Masjid Committee. After hearing both sides during the hearing of the petition, the court allowed the Archaeological Department to conduct the survey. The court has clarified that the government will bear all the expenses of the survey.
On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court gave a historic verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute in Ayodhya which has been going on for more than a century. A Ram temple should be built on the disputed site. A trust should be set up for this. At the same time, it was decided that space should be made available at a strategic place in Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque. After this result, there was a discussion about whether the agitation over the dispute over mosques in Varanasi and Mathura would start. In the same period, the slogan ‘Ayodhya to jhanki hai, Kashi-Mathura baki hai’ given by Vishwa Hindu Parishad in 1992 started to be discussed again. However, the decision of the court in the Kashi case, which is included in this slogan, is considered important.
