The North Bay Police Service said Friday that they will « maintain a limited presence » at a Saturday afternoon rally along the North Bay waterfront.
Police also announced that three people were charged with breaking the rules in an earlier protest known as the « Freedom Rally ». The trio – a 46-year-old woman and two men, ages 36 and 64 – have been charged with failing to comply with an ongoing warrant under Ontario Reopening Act.
« The North Bay Police Service respects the right of every Canadian to protest, » said Scott Tod, North Bay police chief, in the press release. “However, there is currently a statement about the emergency and the order to stay at home in the province. If we see individuals intentionally breaking the Ontario Reopening Act and endangering the safety of others, we must do our job and enforce the law. This also includes the possibility of bringing charges. “
The police want to remind residents that the stay home order means that people should only leave the house for essentials. According to provincial ordinance, indoor gatherings are not permitted and outdoor gatherings are limited to five people.
« In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the provincial government introduced rules that require you to identify yourself to law enforcement if the police believe you are not following the emergency rules, » the police said.
When asked for identification, the police said residents must provide their correct name, date of birth and address.
« If you refuse to identify yourself to a police officer, you can be charged with obstructing the police, » the press release said.
« The North Bay Police Service encourages everyone to follow COVID-19 public health guidelines, including physical distancing and wearing a mask. »
