The Los Angeles Times is committed to reviewing new movie releases during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because going to the movies during this time is risky, we remind readers to follow the health and safety guidelines set out by the CDC and local health authorities. We’ll continue to consider the different ways readers can watch each new movie, including drive-in theaters in Southland and VOD / streaming options when available.

To convey the « Finding You » teen romance experience, here are a few characters: There is the protagonist Finley Sinclair, a tall, blond violinist; Heartbreaker actor Beckett Rush and callous manager father Montgomery Rush; Beckett’s flat costar Taylor Risdale; and there are regular Irish folks named Seamus (who is usually drunk), Molly and Patrick.

Based on Jenny B. Jones’ novel « There You Will Find Me », « Finding You » finds Finley (Rose Reid) on the fraternal footsteps of her deceased brother in Ireland, the land of saints and scholars. The college-aged American is a tech-savvy player trying to get into a conservatory where aspiring students can compose their audition pieces. apparently she needs to learn to play from the heart to be overdone before her next attempt. Perhaps she will learn this lesson on her stay on the Emerald Island … and find romance at the end of the rainbow?

On the plane she meets the evil Hollywood boy Beckett (Jedidiah Goodacre) in an elaborate meeting when she sees one of these free ones Last-second upgrades for the first class that always take place. She apparently doesn’t recognize him, even though she reads a magazine with him on the cover and apparently knows everything about his mischievous representative. Here she shows what counts as sperm by treating it like dirt and making all sorts of negative assumptions about this polite guy she’s never met. I know it seems great.

What a crazy world you end up in the same & Breakfast Bed that Finley’s host family recently inherited under the old laws of convenience of action. If those aren’t the gods telling them they are made for one another, at least the formula dictates it.

You get Beckett’s attraction as he doesn’t seem like a villain, isn’t caught up in fame, and helps out wherever he can. But what is Finley’s allure besides her beauty? The book character’s editor’s description states that she is « funny, tough, and motivated ». Regardless of what changes you made to the movie, these properties will not show up. The best example of her drive seems to be the older Cathleen Sweeney (Vanessa Redgrave of all people), whom she initially describes as a “crazy witch” because Cathleen wants to be left alone. Finley’s toughness never comes into play, and neither is a joke. To be fair, there appears to be a storyline in the novel that involves a « dangerous vice » she gets into. In the film, her most dangerous vice is cycling in the rain.

Rather, this judgmental American dismisses the drunken local violinist Seamus (Patrick Bergin) as an old bum who has nothing to offer. But what if he’s just the guy teaching them? « You have to learn to play the sorrow and the joy. They are connected. Like day and night »?

The scenery is beautiful. Redgrave and Bergin are professionals; Tom Everett Scott is aptly gross as a selfish stage father; and Goodacre has a bit of charm. But the film has forgotten to give its protagonist a personality and seems so determined to be PG-clean that sparks between the main characters are … hard to « find ».

Rated: PG, for language and thematic elements. Duration: 1 hour, 55 minutes. Running time: Starts on May 14 in the general version, when the theaters are open.
