Ebene Magazine - The popular flea collar has been linked to 1,700 pet deaths

According to reports, a popular flea and tick collar is making thousands of pets sick, and even killing some of them – and critics accuse the Environmental Protection Agency of ignoring the problem.

The EPA responsible for regulating Products that contain pesticides have received 75,000 incident reports on Seresto pet collars developed by Bayer and manufactured by Elenco since they were launched in 2012.

This includes 1,698 pet deaths and nearly 1,000 human injury incidents. This emerges from an explosive report released Tuesday by the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting and USA Today.

« After seven years of increasing incidents, they are telling the public that they are continuing to monitor the situation, » said Karen McCormack, a former EPO official, talks about the agency. « But I think this is a significant problem that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. »

Keri McGrath, a Louisville, Kentucky spokeswoman for Elanco, told the Post in an email that more than 25 million Seresto collars have been sold since it was approved in 2012. a fraction of 1 percent of users, « defined by the World Health Organization as » unusual, « she said.

» It’s critical to understand that a report is not an indication of the cause, « said McGrath. « What these numbers represent is the number of reports received and does not reflect causality. »

« No pesticide is completely harmless, » an EPA spokesman said, according to the report, confirming that the agency has determined that the Seresto collars « are eligible for further registration ».

« The EPA ensures that there are measures on the product label that reduce the risk, » added the spokesman. « However, some pets, like some people, are more sensitive than others and may have adverse symptoms after treatment. » However, in a statement to The Post, the agency appeared to indicate that the failure was a failure of the Trump administration .

« Under the Biden Harris administration, the EPA has returned to its core mission, which is to protect the health of our pets, » the statement said. “We take every reported incident seriously and review this data to determine if action is required. The EPA urges pet owners to read the entire label before using the pesticide product and carefully follow all directions, including monitoring your pet after use to see if any side effects are experienced. If side effects occur, the label instructs the consumer to consult the pet’s veterinarian immediately. «

Rhonda Bomwell of Somerset, New Jersey, said she lost her 9-year-old Papillon service dog, Pierre, after putting a Seresto collar on him in June. A day later, Pierre had a seizure. She brought him went to the hospital, but died before he could be treated. Bomwell had no thought of removing the collar from Pierre at the time, the report said.

The Seresto was the top-selling collar on Amazon, but there were still many disturbing reviews of it the collar, which is worn for six to eight months and slowly releases the chemicals to the animal.

« 10 days after putting the Seresto collar on my dog, she had a neurological problem called meningitis » unknown Origin « was diagnosed, » wrote one customer. « She has temporarily lost the use of her hind legs and the vet bills have already exceeded $ 5,000. »

Another reviewer said, « Put this down. » Collar to my 10-pound Maltese and 14-pound Shih Tzu in May 2016. Within 3 days the Shih Tzu was lying in his bed all day whining and every time I picked him up he screamed like he was in pain … take off the collar, bathe him AND the next morning he is back to normal! !!! I called my vet and Bayer and found out that he must be allergic to an ingredient in the collar. “
