The startup for restaurant payments on Sunday started on Wednesday after a massive start-up round of 24 million US dollars with the aim of making it easier for guests to pay their bills.
The QR code-based platform makes it possible Guests can check out at will in just 10 seconds and relieve the staff to concentrate on other things. It also promises higher tips and averages, lower transaction fees and faster table changes.
The Atlanta-based company is committed to becoming a global business-to-consumer company in the spirit of PayPal or Venmo, said the co-founder and US CEO Christine de Wendel.
The product is quite simple: guests can use their smartphone to scan a QR code at their table and pay whenever they want, with options to split the bill and tip. Payments are processed by Stripe and Sunday is currently integrated with most of the major POS providers including Micros, Brink and Square.
It’s not a new technology, but de Wendel said lifting the foundation of Sunday restaurant operations and its simplicity from similar products.

The idea came up early in the pandemic by Tigrane Seydoux and Victor Lugger of Big Mamma Group, a large European operator of Italian restaurants, designed to reduce contact points and simplify the payment process. Tech investor Coatue led the launch, which, according to de Wendel, is the largest in the field of restaurant technology. New York-based Coatue has invested in DoorDash, Instacart, and other big tech companies.

The top priority on Sunday is now to add POS integrations and get more restaurants on board. It focuses on restaurants, but « once we become a B2C brand it works fast too, of course, » said de Wendel.
