EbeneMagazine – AU – Langer wants Goodes to address Australian team on racial discrimination

Justin Langer says he hopes AFL great Adam Goodes shares his experiences of racism with the men’s national team as it determines whether to take a knee in recognition of the Black movement Lives Matter

The men’s national coach recognizes the need to recognize the country’s history of racial discrimination and seeks advice from Indigenous elders and influential members of the Indigenous community such as Goodes and broadcaster Stan Grant on how to best way to proceed

It comes after a week where young indigenous activist Tamika Sadler used a Cricket Australia webcast – Cricket Connecting Country, which seeks to address the game’s historic injustices – to describe it as a « privileged white sport »

WBBL players and teams took a knee during the week, and the National Women’s Team went in a barefoot circle last month in the series against New Zealand

Langer and Australian captain Aaron Finch were criticized by Greater Antillean Michael Holding for not taking a knee on the England tour Holding called their reasoning – that education is more important than protest – to « lame »

The issue has become a talking point in Australian sport Former Wallabies captain Nick Farr-Jones was reprimanded last week by high-ranking natives for downplaying the extent of racism in the country and urging today’s team not to take the knee

The NRL was caught in the center of a storm on Thursday when it announced it would not sing the national anthem at the home state’s opening on Wednesday to reverse the decision following the backlash from fans and the Prime Minister

« I was with a Native Elder last night One of my follow up questions for him today we had a long conversation about this last night I want to understand the story of taking a knee « said Langer

« We are talking about Barefoot Circles, we talked about a number of things, different initiatives or ways to represent this I really want to know the meaning of this and if this is the best way to represent it

« I want to hear it from our Indigenous elders, from people who have been racially discriminated against I didn’t, I want to hear it and what’s the best way forward

« Like I told you a short while ago, we are really aware of it, this is a very big issue in our society right now and we want to make sure we do it and represent it with a lot of respect and dignity

« Whether it’s taking a knee, we’ll get to that in a moment It’s certainly on mind right now »

Goodes and Grant are among a shortlist of names sent to Langer by Adam Cassidy, CA Head of Diversity and Inclusion

Goodes, two-time Brownlow medalist and legend of the Swans, left football disappointed with what he considered to be racist taunts from the crowd and lack of action from the AFL

The saga has been the subject of two documentaries – The Final Quarter by Ian Darling and The Australian Dream, written by Grant

« We have to be educated and be very clear about what we stand for. We want to lead the representation of this, » Langer said on Friday

« We are now working to talk to native elders, people hopefully like Adam Goodes, Stan Grant

« We need to be very clear, take our time and make sure we are really strong on the messages and what we stand for here »

Langer don’t know Goodes personally, but the couple have a mutual connection with former Test greats Adam Gilchrist, who was president of the National Australia Day Council when the Swans champion was named Australian of the Year in 2014.

« After watching Adam’s documentary I was blown away There are a lot of great people in Australia who I am sure will help the Australian cricket team to portray racial discrimination with respect and the dignity it deserves, « said Langer

« This is one of the things I have learned in this job and in life We are very, very lucky because we represent the Australian cricket team that we can reach a lot of people »
