Parliament of the European Union on Thursday accused the Polish government of inappropriately influencing a court that imposed an almost complete ban on abortion, Reuters reported. The European Parliament said this shows that the rule of law in the country has collapsed.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Poland to protest an October decision by the country’s Constitutional Court to tighten the country’s already restrictive abortion laws. The Supreme Court ruled last month that an abnormal abortion in the fetus was unconstitutional.

The EU Parliament passed a resolution on this matter with 455 votes in favor, 145 against and 71 abstentions from 71 members. A majority of the European politicians who debated abortion rights in Poland showed their solidarity with the demonstrators. Renew Europe Group’s Dutch MEP Samira Rafaela also promised to « join them until the end », according to Euronews.

« As for women in Poland, I would like to say that we are right next to you and we will join you in this fight until the end, » added Rafaela.

The resolution followed after the governments in Poland and Hungary vetoed the Union budget and a coronavirus recovery fund earlier this month.

According to the BBC, in 2019 MPs from the ruling Nationalist Law and Justice Party launched a legal obstacle to the Polish Abortion Act, which was enforced in 1993, for severe fetal disabilities. In Poland, 98% of abortions are performed with an indication of the abnormalities.

The Polish police have now used violent means against peaceful protesters, Euronews reported on Wednesday, citing activists. According to a human rights attorney, officials have thrown people on the ground, attacked them with batons, and used kettling, a method that blockades can be used to limit the movement of a crowd in a specific area.

At least 60 protesters, including a 17-year-old, have been arrested in the past few weeks, but the real number is believed to be much higher. Police also accused a photojournalist, Agata Grzybowska, of attacking an officer on Monday. This was the first time a journalist had been arrested during months of protests, the Associated Press reported. She was reportedly dragged away when bystanders asked the officers to stop because she was a journalist. A group then gathered outside a police station in central Warsaw, where they were admitted, and protested that they were detained. She was later released.

« We know that many of the protesters are ill-treated when they are taken to police cars and while they are in custody, » human rights lawyer Eliza Rutynowska told Euronews.

However, the Polish government did not publish the Constitutional Court’s ruling, which, according to Reuters, made the recent restrictions unenforceable. The ruling Law and Justice Party said it was waiting for the court to give a more detailed rationale for its decision.
