Marc-André Bédard, former minister of the Parti Québécois, has died at the age of 85 after being hospitalized for complications related to COVID-19.

His son, who also served under the same banner, confirmed the death on social media Wednesday – hours after the former Justice Minister was hospitalized in Chicoutimi.

« He left an immense legacy in Quebecers, one of confidence and pride, the constant search for justice and commitment to his community, » wrote Stéphane Bédard.

The Parti Québécois also issued a statement on social media expressing condolences to Bédard’s family and loved ones.

Before becoming one of René Lévesque’s right-handers and a founding member of the Sovereign Party, Bédard was a practicing lawyer.

He was elected in 1973. During his time at the National Assembly, Bédard was Minister of Justice from 1976 to 1984.
