Although it was just over 16 hours after the free agency’s “legal manipulation phase” began, Suns fans were getting nervous. Would James Jones take a step? Why didn’t he? James, were you awake ?!
Sun believers had their eyes on Christian Wood, Jerami Grant, Davis Bertans, Danilo Gallinari, Jordan Clarkson and many, many more. But the frenzy, which was “Friday of the free agency”, came and went without Sun’s GM signing anything. It was like the suns were standing in a filthy playground waiting to be selected for a dodgeball game, only to realize that we didn’t have a reputation for being selected.
That changed on Saturday when the announcement came. Phoenix signed a deal with 6’6 ”striker Jae Crowder:
Free agent Jae Crowder has agreed to a three-year deal with the Phoenix Suns, the sources told @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.
With the addition of Crowder, the Suns’ need for more depth at wing positions after the deal by Kelly Oubre, Jr. . last Monday. Crowder brings 8 years of experience, including a trip to the NBA Finals a month ago.
Knew the suns had a legitimate chance to land Crowder last night! Suns had competition for its services, as did the 3rd. year. I’m not yet sure which options I have in 3rd. Supposed to have been a year, but this is a really good move to replace Oubre’s role and hardship! image. Twitter. com / vgR1PlK1v1
Suns have a mix of toughness, athleticism, and high-end skill that nobody wants to see in the playoffs.
Suns knocked out three teams, one of which was Dallas, to sign Crowder for three years. Phoenix is still hoping to bring Dario Saric back.
Knowing the Dallas Mavericks wanted his services makes the acquisition all the sweeter. One team that the Suns will fight for playoff positioning lost the bidding war to win it. He decided to come to Phoenix to be part of this organization and to fight for a championship.
Marquette University’s product is a 3-and-D grand piano that dates from one of its prime times of the year. Crowder started the 2019-20 season with the Memphis Grizzlies and ended with the heat. In 20 games in Miami, he averaged 11. 9 points, 5. 4 rebounds and 1. 3 steals per game, all at 44. 5% shoot from below and 48. 2% total shoot.
The 30-year-old is one of the most versatile wing defenders in the league because of his size and strength. It can protect both the post and the perimeter. His offensive can be spotty and inconsistent at times, but overall, he meets the needs of James Jones’ roster.
Welcome to the valley, Jae Crowder. It seems Hamed Haddadi will no longer claim the highest jersey number in Suns history as Crowder has worn the number 99 across 5 franchises for the past 6 seasons.
