Marcus Rashford has vowed not to give up fighting for starving children after Tory MPs rejected his campaign to extend free school meals during the holidays

The devastated Manchester United star told ministers who voted against Labor’s motion on Wednesday night that a « significant number » of children will go to bed tonight thinking they have no importance

During a heated debate in the Commons this afternoon, the Labor Party introduced its motion, which would see the free school lunch program extended over the mid-term and Christmas break until Easter 2021 It was aimed at to feed 14 million underprivileged children in England on food stamps of £ 15 per week

But the motion was defeated by 261 votes to 322 – a majority of 61 Only five Conservative MPs, out of 323 party members who voted tonight, rebelled in support of the extension

Following the result, Rashford, who became MBE this month, wrote in a statement on Twitter: « Put all the noise, digs, party politics aside and let’s focus on the real thing. p>

« A significant number of children go to bed tonight not only hungry, but feeling unimportant because of the comments that have been made today

« We must stop stigmatizing, judging and pointing fingers Our opinions are clouded by political affiliation This is not politics, this is humanity »

The 22-year-old England striker has urged politicians to « unite » and now is the time to « work together » as child food poverty « has the potential to become the biggest pandemic to which the country has never been confronted ”

He remained defiant in his campaign efforts to help underprivileged children, adding: « As long as they don’t have a voice, they will have mine »

Rashford, who spoke of his own experiences growing up in poverty in Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, said: “I didn’t have the education of a politician

“Many on Twitter made it clear today, but I have a social education after going through this and spending time with the families and children most affected These children matter”

The footballer has previously clashed with several Tory MPs, including former Brexit Minister Steve Baker, who claimed extending free meals would ‘destroy’ the economy

Rashford urged MPs not to ‘close their eyes’, to which Mansfield MP Ben Bradley responded by saying that ‘extending the freebies is sticky plaster, not a solution’

Tory Minister Brendan Clarke-Smith accused the footballer of ‘nationalizing children’, adding: ‘Instead we have to get back to taking responsibility, and that means less celebrity virtue reporting on proxy Twitter and more action to tackle the root causes of child poverty «

Previously, the footballer had managed to force the government to turn around to provide free meals during the summer break, when schools were forced to close during the lockdown – and had hoped to do the same

After a petition launched by the footballer garnered 300,000 votes to force a parliamentary debate, Labor said they would speed things up by calling a vote tonight

Downing Street had ruled out making a late U-turn before the vote, with Boris Johnson telling MPs underprivileged families can use the benefit system « and all income systems to support children during the holidays as well »

Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green said after the vote: “Boris Johnson and the Conservatives have let down more than a million children and their families

« No child should go hungry during the holidays, but the government is blocking necessary measures to prevent this

« We pay tribute to Marcus Rashford and others for shining the spotlight on this extremely important issue. This campaign is not over and the government must reconsider »
