EbeneNews – UA – Newcastle Knights press release regarding allegations of racial abuse in Titans game

The Newcastle Knights have released a statement regarding Tyrone Peachey’s allegations that he was racially abused in Friday night’s game

Titans forward, who is of native descent, alleges Newcastle’s Mitchell Barnett called him a ‘black c ** t’ during play

During the match, referee Chris Sutton asked Peachey if he wanted to escalate the incident with a formal complaint, but the Gold Coast Lock chose not to.

There is no audio of the alleged exchange The NRL Integrity Unit is currently investigating the matter

In the club statement, the Newcastle Knights wrote that Barnett denies making racist comments during the game

« Newcastle Knights assist NRL over racial abuse allegation against player in Round 20 game against Gold Coast, » the statement read

« The Club is conducting its own investigation into the allegations and working alongside the NRL integrity unit

« Racism and defamation have no place in the game and as a club the Knights take a hard line against anyone who thinks this kind of behavior is acceptable

« The club engaged in a dialogue with the Titans overnight and the two players involved in the alleged incident have also spoken out

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo also released a statement following the incident, stressing that racism « will not be tolerated in our game »

« We will speak to all parties involved in order to shed light on the allegations and ensure a fair and respectful process for all, » he said

« The well-being of the players is our top priority We will do everything possible to make our players feel safe and supported »

Newcastle’s attack was listless and their defense was paper thin in Friday night’s game Aside from a few flashes of momentum in the first half, the Knights never looked likely, losing 36-6

The defeat also means the Knights forgo the opportunity to host a home final next week Instead, they will travel to Sydney to play the Rabbitohs in Week 1 of the Finals series.

Rookie coach Adam O’Brien however kept his cool after the game, simply calling the loss a « wake-up call »

« I don’t want to name anyone from our team. There were definitely a number of guys who needed a bigger contribution, » he said

« I’m not taking anything away from the Titans either, they played a really entertaining brand of footy and threw a lot at us

Perhaps most disturbing is Newcastle’s lack of consistency; big loss to Titans follows huge win over St George-Illawarra last week

« This is a major concern It consumes a lot of my thoughts at the moment, » said O’Brien
