Matthieu Jalibert, the French fly half, is only doing its second test start today. The previous one came against Ireland in Dublin more than two and a half years ago.
Jalibert’s lack of exposure has something to do with the rise of Romain Ntamack – the precocious fight whose hamstring injury opened the door this week – but calamity also played a large part.
Months after his debut in Bordeaux at the age of 18, Jalibert was named to the French squad for the Six Nations in 2018. He tore his knee ligaments on his debut at Aviva, missed the rest of the season and suffered an even worse break in a summer friendly. It was brutal bad luck for a man – a teenager – who was just getting started
