The Free Agent Center Hassan Whiteside is leaving Portland Trail Blazers after a year on the team. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the big man signs a one-year contract with the Sacramento Kings and will assert himself with a new team as one of the better rim protectors in the NBA.
Portland acquired Whiteside from the Miami Heat last off-season to be a temporary replacement for Jusuf Nurkic, and he thrived during his stint as a starter. It was an expensive rent last season of a four-year $ 98 million contract but averaged 15. 5 points and 13. 5 rebounds per game while leading the NBA with 196 blocks during the regular season. The kings could really use the capabilities of this double-double machine.
Whiteside was selected by the Kings in the second round of the 2010 design. He hasn’t been to Sacramento, however, and screwed the NBA down for Lebanon and China before returning. Whiteside was signed by the Heat and became one of the league’s top color defenders averaging 2. 4 blocks per game in five seasons with Miami. It was distributed to the Blazers and signed that massive deal. It didn’t quite work out in Portland, however, and Whiteside ends up back where it started.
The Kings had to add a veteran center with little depth to the list. Alex Len left through the free agency for the Raptors and Richaun Holmes is more of a PF than a real 5. With Holmes and Marvin Bagley III sticking forward, Whiteside has a clear way of getting game time to play in the middle of a rebuilt SacTown team. If Whiteside can stay healthy there is no reason he can double-double again while at the top of the NBA on blocks. He’ll keep some fantasy basketball worth, if nothing more than a block specialist on a weak Kings team.
