Jose Enrique picks Man Utd’s tormenter as Spain’s biggest threat at Euro 2020 en

Former Liverpool full-back Jose Enrique has identified Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno as Spain’s biggest threat at Euro 2020.

The 29-year-old forward is coming off the back of a thrilling 2020-21 campaign where he scored 30 goals in all competitions for the Yellow Submarine.

Seven of those came in the Europa League, including one against Manchester United in the final, peeling away from Victor Lindelof to give Unai Emery’s side the lead and scoring in the thrilling penalty shoot-out that followed.

Spain currently sit outside the favourites to win the competition this summer but if La Roja are to repeat their 2008 and 2012 triumphs, Moreno could have an important role to play.

‘Gerard Moreno if he is still in the same form as he was in La Liga,’ Enrique told 101 Great Goals when asked who is Spain’s most important player.

‘The problem is where Luis Enrique plays him. Definitely if he plays as a striker, he will be our biggest threat.’

Spain lack the firepower of previous tournaments when they had the strikers of the calibre of David Villa and Fernando Torres leading the line.

Spain also have the option of Alvaro Morata up front and Enrique has challenged the former Chelsea striker to keep the pressure on Moreno.

‘He [Morata] is another very experienced player. He has proved himself in the past, but he needs to show why he deserves to be in the team.

‘He has competition from Gerard Moreno, the Villareal striker who is a really good player so I’m not sure if Luis Enrique is going to play with two strikers or one.

‘If it’s just one I don’t even know if Morata will start. It’s a very important tournament for Morata to try to change the public’s perception of him. There is always doubt about him.’
