The Raptors continue to fill out their list, adding the selection for the first round of 2016 for a short-term deal – a second year is again not guaranteed.
In case you thought it was safe to go to sleep in Toronto that snowy Sunday, the Raptors are here with another wake-up call: They’re signing little forward DeAndre ‘Bembry, late with the Atlanta Hawks, on a two-year deal. Adam Shefter (!?) From ESPN brought the news:
Mini: Former Hawks’ SF DeAndre Bembry has signed a two-year contract for $ 4 million per source with the Toronto Raptors.
Bembry’s deal is not guaranteed for the second year, according to a source. It’s also not 2/4, it’s min for a veterinarian so the rest of the MLE is still available.
(We’re going to get our husband Daniel Hackett to sort out the numbers! But again, the option for the second year shows that the Raptors will continue to focus on maintaining flexibility in 2021. )
Bembry was 21. Election in 2016 draft and spent the last four seasons with the Hawks (with some time early in the G-League). He is an athletic, energetic wing who can get into the fast lane and guard multiple positions. He’s not a great shooter and has room for improvement as a playmaker, but these are areas where he should benefit greatly from his time with Toronto’s player development coaches. He gives the wing depth and was able to see time in small ball setups with Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby on the forecourt.
Bembry average 5. 8 points and 3. 5 rebounds in 21 minutes per game last season, 46% from the ground but only 23% from downtown. (Hmm, sounds a little early – Siakam-ish!) Bembry was out of rotation for the second half of the year, and overall his numbers went down from 2018 to 2019 (8). 4 points and 4. 4 boards in 23. 5 minutes).
All in all, he’s exactly the right type of player to accept a value-for-money flyer in what appears to be a year of transition for the Raptors.
This move likely means the raptors will not bring back Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who is an unrestricted free agent (and whose bird rights the raptors do not have). .
