The Toronto Raptors have lost another piece of their championship team to the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Serge Ibaka signed a two-year deal with the Clippers worth $ 19 million. Season two was a player option.
Toronto’s front office traveled to Ibaka on Saturday night and could have offered more money than any other competitor, but it’s unclear how much they are putting on the table. The Raptors may not have reached the end of the Clippers offering as the Raptors are prioritizing the flexibility of the cap for the summer of 2021 when multiple star-free agents could be available.
For now, it’s a massive loss for the Raptors, who now have to strive to keep free agents Marc Gasol and Chris Boucher while they are looking for pieces of depth to fill their forecourt. Ibaka’s efficient and reliable scoring is sorely missed as he has become a dependable finisher within the color and a believable 3-point threat. Neither Boucher nor Gasol replace that know-how, and the remaining sizes in the market are terrible to say the least.
Ibaka is leaving Toronto a beloved character, both for his productivity and his sociable personality. He was initially billed as a long-term starter at Power Forward, but moved to the middle and willingly took on a bank role with the arrival of Marc Gasol. He did everything with a flair that suited his open-minded nature outside of the game. He was ready to make sacrifices and most of all, prioritized winning.
Most notably, Ibaka was an integral part of the Raptors’ title run. He backed Kawhi Leonard’s exploits in Game 7 with three threes from the bench, including a memorable pull-up sweater about Ben Simmons, in a game that was starving for points. Ibaka was also on the ground during most of the 26-3 run that overcame the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 6 to send the Raptors to the finals. And against Golden State Ibaka finished the game with 20, 15 and 15 points to secure the title.
