The news kind of got spoiled by leaks, but 2K has now officially announced the Mafia: Trilogy, with two-thirds of it available from today.
There’ve been so many rumours and leaks of a remaster for Mafia 2 that it will come as no surprise to find out they’re true and that Mafia 2: Definitive Edition is out today on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
The fact that Mafia 3: Definitive Edition is also out today made it all the way through to the official announcement though, so at least that’s something.
The only part of the trilogy that’s not being released today is Mafia: Definitive Edition, which you’ll have to wait until 28 August for.
Since Mafia 3 is only three years old there’s relatively few changes to that, although the new edition does contain all the originally released DLC.
Mafia 2 first came out in 2010, so that requires a more substantial remaster, raising the resolution to 4K and adding extra graphical detail (and all the original DLC).
Mafia 1 is even older, dating all the way back to 2002, so rather than just a remaster it’s getting a full-on remake with, as you can see, some very impressive graphics.
Set in the 1930s (Mafia 2 is set in the 40s and 50s, and Mafia 3 in the late 60s), Mafia: Definitive Edition will not only feature new graphics but an updated script with better dialogue and expanded backstories, new cut scenes, and new gameplay sequences and improved car handling.
Mafia: Trilogy is available as a single purchase of £49.99-£54.99, or you can buy Mafia 2 or 3 separately for £24.99. Or the Mafia 1 remake separately for £34.99.
The digital versions will be available from today, but you’ll have to wait for Mafia 1 on 28 August if you want the physical edition.
However, if you already own Mafia 2 on Steam you get an automatic free upgrade to the Definitive Edition. The same goes for Mafia 3, but also on Xbox One and Steam.
There’s also a variety of discounts and pre-order bonuses depending on when you buy and whether you own any of the other games, so we’d check the official website first, before you make a decision.
