Netflix has secured exclusive streaming rights to Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, the newest member of the legendary Anime Mecha franchise. This film will be the first of three films to adapt Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash, a novel by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. « After Char’s rebellion, Hathaway Noa leads an uprising against the Earth Federation, but the encounter with an enemy officer and a mysterious woman changes his fate, » says the film description.
In an interview, Yoshiyuki Tomino expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming film: “30 years after I wrote these novels, they are finally being made into a film. As a writer, I’m very happy. ”Tomino reflected on the general feelings of regression and hopelessness experienced by fans who grew up with Gundam. He expressed the wish that the themes of his film penetrate today’s society and convey a hopeful message in the new series and thus pass the baton on to the next generation who pave the way for the future. ”In their work are even younger. I believe that this young generation will one day pave the way for a reformation of humanity – for newtypes, « he says.
The film was originally supposed to be in theaters last July, but was canceled due to COVID-19 -Pandemic postponed three times as multiple states of emergency were declared in Japan. The film, set to premiere in Japan on June 11, will be streamed on Netflix on July 1, 2021.
