After the shoe first appeared in January this year, Rick Owens and Converse have now revealed an official look at the upcoming DRKSHDW TURBODRK Chuck 70 collaboration. The outstanding feature of the revised silhouette is the square-toe construction, which was first used on the Chuck 70.
The square toe refers to the ethos that Owens has brought into the collaboration – described as « distorting the ubiquitous » – which continues on the elongated tongue. This construction is used in the Hi and Ox versions of the shoe, while each is available in the classic black or white canvas color options.
On the occasion of the global start of the collaboration, Owens discussed the design with HYPEBEAST. « I’ve featured (and personally worn) platform boots for the past few seasons that have a square-toe grill, » he says of the square-toe construction. « Warping the iconic Converse toe into this shape drew him into my current world. » As he went on, Owens added that his desire to be « distorted » stems from « a cheeky youthful demeanor that I probably indulge in more may than I should ”. The designer added that the collaboration was inspired by his desire to « highlight the extremist transgression that the black and white Chuck of the 1970s always implied ».
The TURBODRK Chuck 70 also closes a circle for Owens, which began with the DRKSHDW Ramones sneaker from spring / summer 2014, which was inspired by the classic Converse silhouette. « Having referred to Converse in the past, it’s a nice end to have them invite them to join, » adds Owens. « Converse makes me more accessible to its larger audience than I could, has a synergetic logic. »
Owens’ collaboration with Converse is their latest joint release this year. In addition to the Chuck 70 makeover, he also worked with Champion, Dr. Martens and Birkenstock worked together. “I am embedded in the social fabric in a new way by aligning myself with a global brand like Converse,” he explains of his collaboration. “This could enable me to share my enthusiasm for a more tolerant and inclusive personal aesthetic with more people. I want to help free the crazy kids like the Converse-wearing Ramones did for me. »
