Former West Indies Test captain Jason Holder was leading the team till the tour of England in the year 2020. He was sacked by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in March after the tour of Bangladesh. The less experienced Craig Brathwaite had led the team to victory against Bangladesh. Holder is no longer the captain and has reacted.
In a conversation with ESPN, Holder said about his removal from captaincy that it was a kind of shock for me. Coming from the captain as a player creates difficulties and Holder has acknowledged it as well. He said yes it has become difficult and I cannot show it but it is happening.
Brathwaite grabbed the opportunity and the West Indies team displayed character, grit and determination as a young team, trying to keep the Bangladesh team calm in their own home. Several players of the country’s first choice had refused to travel to Bangladesh for the two-match Test series due to the coronavirus. After this, the West Indies captain Craig Brathwaite was made and the team also included many young players, in which Kyle Myers impressed. In his debut Test itself, he scored a double century to win the Windies.
West Indies cricket’s chief selector Roger Harper lauded Brathwaite’s efforts in leading the youth team and credited him for instilling confidence within the team in such a short span of time. It was a defining moment for Harper as he was the one who gave the captaincy to Brathwaite and in this the Windies got success. Craig Brathwaite is now captaining the Test series against South Africa as well.
