Securolytics COO charged with cyberattack on Georgia hospital

The COO and co-founder of Securolytics, an Atlanta-based IoT security startup, was charged with his alleged role in a 2018 cyber attack on a Georgia hospital, the US Department of Justice said Thursday.

Vikas Singla, of Marietta, Georgia, was accused of conducting a 2018 cyber attack against Gwinnett Medical Center (now known as Northside Hospital) that damaged one or more computers that controlled the hospital’s Ascom phone system and printer service The indictment states that the alleged attack was « for the purpose of commercial gain and personal financial gain » and Singla was « unknown » by others unknown to the grand jury are, supported and favored « .

While Securolytics’ website currently has no mention of Singla, Singla is mentioned in a 2019 snapshot of Wayback Machine’s website and named as the company’s co-founder and COO.

Details on the details of the data breach, including the exact one Its demeanor, Singla’s possible intentions, and how he was caught remain unknown. The DOJ said the FBI is still investigating the attack.

Singla has been charged in 17 cases of willful damage to a protected computer and one case of computer information retrieval from a protected computer. Each of the first 17 counts has a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and the final count has a maximum sentence of 5 years.

A Northside Hospital spokesman wrote in an email: « We are pleased with this result and we thank them many individuals and organizations who have worked so hard for us. « 

The US Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia declined to comment. Securolytics and the DOJ did not respond to our request for comment.
