Melbourne’s Smith Street, a vibrant strip known for its hip restaurants, wine bars, vintage shops and live music scene, has been named the coolest street in the world in a new global ranking.
Entertainment and culture bible Time-out surveyed 27,000 city dwellers around the world to come up with a list of 30 of the world’s coolest streets.
The north end of trendy Smith Street, which forms the border between Collingwood and Fitzroy, took home the top prize.
King Street, the main road through Newtown, in Sydney’s west, was the only other Australian entry on the list, landing in 19th place.

Los Angeles’ iconic Sunset Boulevard, Singapore’s quirky Haji Lane, New York’s Queens’ vibrant 30th Street, Lima’s colorful Calle José Gálvez, and Berlin’s charming Mariannenstrasse were some of the other trendy spots to make the cut.
But above all else was Collingwood’s own cool capital, Smith Street.
“It makes a lot of sense – Smith Street and Collingwood as a whole are extremely popular places to hang out in Melbourne,” Time-out wrote.
“Once the stomping grounds of street gangs in the 1800s, Collingwood has a long, proud, checkered history of giving the middle finger to authority. It has been overshadowed by Fitzroy and Brunswick Street for decades, but where the former is starting to get a bit stale, Smith Street is only getting better.”
Time-out said you « never have a dull moment » on Smith Street – day and night.
“You’ll find everything from rowdy footy pubs to sophisticated wine bars, vinyl record stores to Vietnamese bakeries, and there’s even more to explore in the side streets,” it said.
« At night, Collingwood’s pubs, gay bars and live music are a magnet for Melburnians who like to go on into the early hours. »
The bohemian center of King Street in Sydney’s Newtown has been praised for its nightlife and « curious collection of restaurants ».
« It may not be quite the grungy counter-culture center it was a few decades ago, but the gentle regeneration of Newtown’s main artery has done little to extinguish its indie creds, » Time-out wrote.
« If Bondi is a morning city, King Street is where Sydneysiders gather after dark. »
The list comes as a separate global ranking of the world’s most livable cities, released this week by the Economist Intelligence Unit, naming Adelaide as the best Australian city to live.
Perth was sixth on the global index, while Melbourne – which had been number one in the index for seven years – fell to number eight. Brisbane landed in 10th place and Sydney was 11th.
