People up and down the country have been displaying their support ahead of the Euro 2021 kick-off
It’s less than 72 hours until England begin their Euro 2021 campaign against Croatia at Wembley and excitement is reaching fever pitch all across the country. That leads to one thing every tournament summer – the widespread display of flags in support of the Three Lions.
In Bermondsey, South London, Kirby estate has been dubbed England’s ‘Most Patriotic Estate’ after it was adorned with over 400 England flags ahead of the tournament kick-off.
The tradition on Kirby began with Euro 2012 and has since ballooned with every international tournament to include hundreds of flats.
England were knocked out on penalties by Italy in the quarter-final of that tournament, but local resident and organiser of the flag-hanging Chris Ralph Dowse is much more optimistic heading into Euro 2021.
“They call us the flag ninjas,” Mr Dowse told The Evening Standard. “Because we do it at the crack of dawn and they wake up to it. This year we have more than ever and there is a real feeling England can do it. Football is coming home.”
Not all residents on the estate are English, so the flags from other nations do appear. It creates a real festival of football atmosphere.
Elsewhere, Adam Chamberlain, 45, who is the general manager of the Big Tree pub in Sheffield, has put up over 500 flags of all the nation’s represented at the tournament. The mammoth task reportedly took him 36 hours.
The incredible decorations also include two massive 10ft ‘Come on England’ inflatable mascots and roughly 2,000 feet of buntings and flags.
« We thought we wanted to do something special for the Euros because it’s been quite a tough year and we’re all just buzzing for this, » Mr. Chamberlain said. « We wanted to lift spirits and get everyone excited and thought – go big or go home. »
