Gary Thorne isn’t in the booth for the Orioles’ home opener, but his comments from last season appear as relevant as ever.
The Yankees terrorized the Orioles last season and went 17-2 against the Birds in a historic domination of their AL East rivals.
Wednesday, they picked up where they left off with three home runs in the first three innings, which brought fans back to Thorne’s comments from a year ago.
« I, I don’t know, » Thorne said in one of the few times the broadcaster wasn’t sure what to say. « Goodbye, home run. You cannot imagine this happening in Major League Baseball, or any other place in baseball. I mean, he is just unstoppable. And it’s all home runs against the Orioles. »
The Yankees had a leadoff home run from DJ LeMahieu which was followed by home runs from Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks in the second and third innings, respectively.
The Yankees have hit 3 HR so far in their game tonight vs the Orioles at Camden Yards.Last season, the Yankees hit multiple home runs in all 10 of their games at Camden Yards& hit at least 3 HR in 9 of those 10 contests. pic.twitter.com/5F5z56shh5
A season ago, the Yankees hit 61 home runs against the Orioles in 19 games. Camden Yards was especially horrifying for the Orioles, as the Yankees hit 43 home runs in 10 games in Baltimore. In those 10 games, the Orioles scored 44 runs.
If there was a bright spot for Orioles fans, it’s that through the top of the fifth inning, Torres was 0-for-3 with a strikeout.
